A once forlorn courtyard in the middle of a low-income housing complex is transformed into a lively, vegetated intergenerational space. A number of discrete zones for different levels of activity are organized around a wide ribbon pathway, with planted areas buffering the public space from the adjacent apartments. Gardens for children and seniors create spaces for quiet sitting, while a basketball area and outdoor gym are connected to the classrooms and community space. Visibility is ensured through low plantings, and minimal fences protect the gardens. A playground anchors the rear of the courtyard, provided a safe space for parents and children. thread also developed a conceptual framework for the streets and signage around the numerous HELP properties in the area. thread has also completed several interior renovation projects with HELP, including a large women’s shelter in the Bronx.
